The first French colonists in the area named it Grand Traverse Bay. After a sawmill was built, the population increased and Grand Traverse City was created. In the 1850s, the “Grand” was removed from the name to become Traverse City.

Today, Traverse City is known for its National Cherry Festival held during the first week of July. The Traverse City Film festival also brings tourism to the area and takes place at the end of July.
