Fur traders lived on the land that’s now Kalamazoo since the late 18th century, but it wasn’t until 1829 that settler Titus Bronson built a cabin and named the town “Bronson” after himself. In 1836, the village was renamed Kalamazoo.

Historically, Kalamazoo produced a wide variety of goods like windmills, guitars, and stoves. Agriculturally, Kalamazoo produced celery and today produces corn and soybeans. Kalamazoo had numerous paper mills too, and used to be known as the “Paper City.”

Today, Kalamazoo is known for its breweries, manufacturing, and research in medical sciences.
